After nearly 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry, Guillaume Junjaud
founded HMC Matching with one strong conviction: in Life Sciences,
successful recruitment or expert sourcing is not just about finding a good
profile. It is about understanding the company’s challenges, the talent’s
expectations, and creating the right match on both sides.
Guillaume, could you tell us about your background?
I spent nearly 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry, across a wide range of roles: R&D, clinical operations, data management, external innovation, business development, industrial affairs, corporate strategy, portfolio management, and digital and organizational transformation.
This experience allowed me to work with many different people in different roles and to gain a very practical understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare companies. In Life Sciences, needs are rarely straightforward: profiles are scarce, environments are highly regulated, development cycles are long, and every recruitment or expert mission can have a significant impact on the trajectory of a project. It was this hands-on industry experience that led me to create HMC Matching.
Why did you create HMC Matching?
I created HMC Matching with a simple belief: in Life Sciences, matching a CV with a job description is not enough. We founded HMC Matching to address a gap that was still insufficiently covered in the Life Sciences ecosystem: the need for a partner able to combine sector expertise, agility and flexibility in the search for the right candidate.
Our approach adapts to the real challenges faced by companies, whether they involve recruitment, temporary expert support or strategic advisory. The ambition is always the same: to provide tailored, relevant and operational solutions.
To create a truly successful match, you need to understand the company’s challenges in depth, its stage of development, business constraints, budget constraints and culture, as well as the real expectations of the candidate or expert. The objective is twofold: to help the company find the right expertise at the right time, and to help the talent join a project in which they can truly engage, grow and create value.
What makes HMC Matching different?
Our approach is strongly based on network and recommendation. We are not operating through a traditional headhunting model. Every day, we build and develop a qualified network of experts, executives, managers and trusted connections across the Life Sciences sector. This allows us to access profiles who are sometimes less visible, not necessarily actively looking, but open to a relevant project.
“We are not simply looking for “a compatible CV”. We are looking for a genuine fit between expertise, context, company culture, collaboration model and career timing.”
How do you support your clients?
We always start from the client’s real need. Depending on the context, the right answer is not necessarily an immediate recruitment. A company may need to hire a key profile, but it may also need to bring in a freelance expert, an interim manager, a part-time profile or a team of experts to address a strategic issue.
This is why we have structured HMC Matching around three complementary offers:
- Recruitment, to identify and assess permanent profiles, from junior roles to executive and C-level positions.
- Individual freelance expertise, to address a targeted, operational or temporary need, with an expert, a part-time profile or an interim manager.
- Strategic advisory in teams, to mobilize several experts around a specific challenge: R&D reorganization, medical, clinical or regulatory strategy, market access, product development, fundraising, roadmap structuring or business reflection.
This approach allows us to remain solution- and results-oriented, while taking into account the business need, the company’s stage of development and its constraints.
What types of clients do you work with?
We support the full diversity of the Life Sciences ecosystem: biotechs, medtechs, pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic companies, medical device players, consumer healthcare companies, CROs, CDMOs and innovative healthcare companies.
Our client portfolio reflects this diversity: around half of our clients are biotech and medtech companies, one quarter are large companies — including Big Pharma, major consumer healthcare groups and large medical device companies — and the remainder is spread across consulting, scientific cosmetics, food and nutrition, the public sector and specialized healthcare organizations.
We therefore work with very different types of organizations, often at key moments in their development: structuring, growth, clinical entry, industrialization, fundraising or international expansion. The challenge remains the same: accessing the right expertise and talent to secure a milestone, accelerate a project or reach the next stage.
What types of profiles do you work with?
We work with a wide range of profiles across the entire value chain: R&D, preclinical and clinical development, medical affairs, regulatory affairs, quality, CMC, industrialization, market access, business development, finance, HR and general management.
We speak with young PhDs, experts, freelancers, interim managers, executives, as well as support and business profiles who want to evolve within the Life Sciences ecosystem. What matters to us is understanding each person’s background, skills, motivations and criteria: type of company, level of autonomy, collaboration model, mobility, compensation, work-life balance, and scientific, entrepreneurial or managerial interests.
What advice would you give to candidates?
I would advise them not to think only in terms of job title or type of contract. The same job title can cover very different realities depending on whether you work in an early-stage biotech, a medtech company, a pharmaceutical laboratory, a CDMO or a services company. Of course, the role itself matters. But it is just as important to look at the environment, the team, the company’s stage of development, the level of uncertainty, the culture, and what will truly drive your motivation day to day.
It is also important to remain opportunistic, in the positive sense of the word: to be open to conversations, projects and different formats. A freelance mission, a part-time role or an opportunity within a smaller structure can sometimes become a real career accelerator. And above all, you need to talk to people.
“Networks remain essential to better understand roles, possible career paths and opportunities that are not always visible.”
Any final words for the Biotechno community?
Life Sciences offer a wide diversity of career paths. You can come from research, medicine, pharmacy, engineering, business, finance, HR or consulting, and build very different trajectories. At HMC Matching, our ambition is to create bridges between talents and the companies that are innovating in healthcare. I therefore invite candidates, experts, freelancers and executives interested in the Life Sciences ecosystem to create their candidate space on the HMC Matching platform. This enables us to better understand their background, expectations and criteria, so that we can share the most relevant opportunities or missions when they arise.
